Potato Quest

In development

Spuds, swings, and small dramas.

Potato Quest is a fast, highly replayable endless platformer. You fling a cosmetically-questionable potato from platform to platform while the world auto-scrolls and speeds up beneath you — drag to aim, release to launch, and don't fall off the back of the screen. The further you get, the higher your score.

Play it now

No install needed — this is the real game running in your browser.

Drag to aim, release to launch — don’t fall off the back of the screen. Best on desktop or tablet.

How it plays

One control: drag anywhere to aim, release to launch the potato. The further you drag, the harder it goes — and it goes exactly where you point, even at full power. Gravity does the rest. The screen scrolls left on its own and gets faster the longer you survive, so every launch has to land you somewhere you can launch again. Miss, and the left edge catches up with you.

That single loop powers all five ways to play — they only differ in who you're playing against:

  • Solo — just you and your high score. No internet required. Your best score or your level unlocks everything cosmetic: new potato skins (11 of them, from Partially Peeled all the way to Gold, Robo and Cactus) and new worlds (Mountains free, Desert at 10 or level 3, City at 25 or level 5). Every point you score also earns XP toward your next level.
  • Versus — the same run, but against an asynchronous ghost of a real player in your tier. There are seven tiers — Spud Sprout, Tater Tot, Couch Potato, Hot Potato, Mashed Master, Golden Spud, Spud Royale — and you're slotted by high score. Out-score the ghost and you win coins equal to your tier number, which buy accessories. Versus runs still count toward your high score.
  • Daily Challenge — one curated course shared by every player worldwide for 24 hours. You race a ghost of the day's leader; whoever posts the highest score wears the crown until someone beats it. Daily runs don't touch your high score — it's its own ladder.
  • Friends Rumble — its own course each day, and everyone on your friends list who has already run it races beside you at once, each a named ghost, each leaving a tombstone where they fell. You get one attempt a day and your best run stands; when you land, you get told where you placed. Rumble banks XP but pays no coins and never touches your high score, so nobody can farm it. You can also watch the whole of yesterday's pack play back as one race.
  • Challenge a Friend — pick one friend, set a score on a fresh course, and they have to race your ghost to beat it. Also XP-only, and there's a cap on how many you can start each day.

Friends Rumble and Challenge a Friend need an internet connection and an Apple or Google sign-in — the rest of the game plays as a guest. You add people with a short SPUD- code you can reset at any time, or by username if you've left yourself searchable.

What you earn, and what you pay for

Every cosmetic in the game is earned by playing. 11 potato skins and 3 worlds come from your high score or your level, whichever you hit first. 41 hats and glasses hang off the competitive modes: 36 are bought with coins you win in Versus, and the last 5 are crowns you only get by topping a Daily Challenge. None of it can be bought with money, and there's no way to pay to climb a leaderboard.

The game is free, and it's funded by ads — an ad after some Solo runs, and an optional one you can watch for an extra Versus, Daily or Rumble attempt. If you'd rather not, a single one-off Unlimited Pass removes every ad and lifts the daily attempt limits. It's the only purchase in the game, and it buys you convenience, not cosmetics or an advantage.

Built solo, with AI

Built solo by Harry Mitchell as the first release under Starch Development. Every line of the 2026 rebuild was written through an AI coding workflow, and every skin, accessory and background was AI-generated then hand-cleaned. The full story is in Rebuilding Potato Quest with AI.

What's inside

Features

Solo

The core endless platformer. Launch your potato as far as you can and chase a new high score. Every score milestone (or level-up) unlocks a new skin or world. Plays offline.

Versus

Race the ghost of another player in your tier — from Spud Sprout up to Spud Royale. Beat their score and bank coins equal to your tier (1 to 7) to spend on accessories.

Daily Challenge

One course, the whole world, 24 hours. Everyone races the same level against a ghost of the current leader. Post the top score and you wear the crown until someone knocks you off.

Friends Rumble

One course a day, every friend who has played it racing beside you at once as a named ghost — with a tombstone where each one fell. Or call out a single friend and make them race your ghost.

Cosmetics you earn

11 potato skins and 3 worlds unlock by high score or by levelling up; 41 hats and glasses come from coins you win in Versus and crowns you win in the Daily. None of it is for sale.
